Rural Literacy Program (Print and Digital)

THE PROBLEM

Lack of access to reading materials – supplemental readers, textbooks, current reading material and educational devices in rural communities.

 OUR SOLUTION

A public library that is accessible to all from which a book lending program could be efficiently and effectively run. We provide books to schools, orphanages and book clubs. Computer training and lending of mobile devices is part of the Literacy Program for those that join.

GOAL

To build a reading culture from the grass roots by making books widely available in all genres and ages.

OPERATIONS

The Sepi Mukombe Mpambara Public Library, set up in 2010, serves the entire community of Kabale. With books in all genres, and a special dedicated section for local authors the library is run by a fully trained librarian with a Bachelor’s degree in Librarianship.  The Library carries Ugandan newspapers and occasional international papers too.

RESULTS

A robust membership of library patrons that include local professionals, teachers, students and even some tourists.
