Health & Wellness Program
THE PROBLEM
No access – both financial and physical – to any annual pediatric check-ups to monitor development. Doctors are only seen when children are very sick.
THE SOLUTION
Conduct onsite (at school) annual medical check-ups once a year for all children as preventative primary care. Refer any issues discovered during the physical to the regional hospital in partnership with local healthcare organizations.
THE GOAL
Develop accurate assessments and individualized charts for each child to monitor physical and developmental milestones. Refer all discovered issues to the regional hospital for follow-up.
OPERATIONS
Working with local healthcare training partners, children received primary care – physical, dental and vision.
Operations were suspended for lack of enough equipment to conduct checks safely. Funding for this program is being sought.
RESULTS
Provided preventive care that treated some illnesses, cared for minor injuries, and referred complex/chronic cases to specialists at Kabale Regional Hospital for further evaluation. Cases included: heart care, diabetes, behavior, gastroenterology, gynecology and dental. Parent’s received growth charts and reports on their children’s growth.
