Penpal Program
THE PROBLEM
A very myopic view of the world leads to stereotypes and misunderstanding, conflict and confusion. When the world beyond your own is opened up for you a better understanding results later in life.
THE SOLUTION
Empathy, like faith or sports, is best taught when young so that it can translate into something that no only benefits you but benefits others. Could peers, hand writing to each other via snail mail, create an authentic link that creates a focus that meaningfully expands horizons in a way that leads to progress?
GOAL
“Connecting Kids” strives to let children telling their own stories; stories that explore life but are based firmly in commonalities that create a bond of friendship.
OPERATIONS
Over 3000 letter exchanges since the program started in 2010. Whole schools and special program venues engaged children in letter writing or art (the younger ones). When letters are received a presentation is given to both sets of children to provide background and to answer questions.
RESULTS
An authentic program that has expanded the horizons of children – both in Uganda and in the U.S – in ways that a book or movie could never do.
